Lemon Detox Diet

There is a great deal of hype around the Lemon Detox Diet. Celebrities such as Mariah Carey and Beyonce Knowles swear by it and there are many stories of significant short term weight loss on the diet. So lets find out what it is all about and if it could work for you.

Lemon Detox Diet Recipe  |  Lemon Detox Diet Health Risks

How the Lemon Detox Diet Works

The basis behind the diet is that it is meant to release your body of poisonous toxins. These toxins supposedly build up in your body as a result of chemicals it is exposed to through diet and environment. These toxins can then lead to a deterioration in quality of life through lack of energy, tiredness, disease and other conditions.

While on the diet your only intake throughout the day is the lemon detox drink which consists of lemon, tree syrup, cayenne pepper, salt, herbal tea and water. Many of these ingredients are recognised as releasing toxins in the body. All the ingredients play different roles in the detoxifying process.

  • Lemon juice - Is meant to flush waste through the body, in particular through the blood stream, putting less strain on the digestive system.
  • Cayenne pepper - speeds up the metabolism which helps promote the cleansing process.
  • Salt/Herbal tea -  helps stimulate bowl movement which give the toxins a path out of the body.
  • Water - Keeps the body hydrated and aides the cleansing process.
  • Tree syrup - Contains nutrients and calories to keep the body functioning during the diet. It is also claimed that the quality of this tree syrup is pertinent for the success of the diet and justifies the hefty price for otherwise cheap ingredients.

These ingredients are mixed together to form and drink and the diet consists of having 6 - 10 of these drinks each day.

Lemon Detox under the microscope.

Each drink has roughly 60 calories, so by restricting your diet to only 600 calories a day you will lose weight, however it is not catch free. Given the average person requires around 2000 calories each day this diet creates a large calorie deficit. This causes the body to go into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism down. When your body shuts down like this you tend to feel tired and lethargic, and the body converts what little calories it gets into fat and preferentially breaks down muscle. The net effect of this is after short term weight loss, the body puts weight back on  quickly, and in most cases the muscle lost will be replaced with fat.

If you are looking for fast weight loss, the Lemon Detox Diet could work for you, however be aware of the possible side effects and the risk of putting the weight straight back on. For long term weight loss may be better to consider a balanced meal plan coupled with regular exercise. It may not be as glamorous, but the long term results should speak for themselves.

You do not lose any body muscle and this is not a starvation diet. The weight loss is from damaged and diseased cells where toxins are stored. Your metabolism also does not slow down due to the cayenne pepper. Above all you should not be doing this diet purely for weight loss but for a full cleanse to regain health.

I have just purchased this stuff. It is hardly any different to the optifast full meal replacement diet (which health care professionals recommend to overweight people before operations). Tha calorie rquirements are the same. I am going to try this diet to get me started then convert to the optifast vlcd for continued weight management.

Interesting article. I have been thinking about trying the lemon detox diet for some time. A friend of mine tried the lemon detox diet and lost a lot of weight in a short period of time. However he put the weight straight back on.

this diet really does work! its great for people wanting to lose weight quickly. to stop the weight from being regained you need to change your lifestyle habits. once the diet is over, you cannot simply go back to eating what you used to. you need to take things slowly and wean yourself back to normal foods such as dairy products and meat. this takes around 7 days

Last day, DAY 10. Well I have made it! I start to cycle down to a healthy balanced diet tomorrow. I have lost 5.9kgs during the process. I have renewed energy levels and have been able to start cardio workouts which I was unable to do two weeks ago. I recommend this to people who first READ all the information on the Lemon Detox site INCLUDING the side effects. If is not for the faint hearted yet once you are passed day 3 it is easy.

This is the last day of cycling down to 'normal' food. I still have no cravings and energy is still high. Going back to normal food is quiet easy, mind you, you are still detoxing through the process as you are only eating fruit and veggies for three days. Total loss now is 6.7 kgs and my body fat has dropped 5.8% while still retaining what muscle I have.

but your not supposed to eat on Day5, unless you only went for a 4day detox.... on day 5, should only have been eating mushed up Veggies, body is able to handle solids yet....so am guessing you ate solids, and stomach rejected it.. i did a 7day detox 2 years ago, 1st 2 days hurt bad, real bad, caffeine withdrawlls the worst, lost 13kgs, felt great... started 2nd detox 4 days ago, not as bad as last time on days 1 and 2, but today day 4 getting headaches, feeling tired.... thinking day 5 is limit this time....

anyone reading this/thinking to do it DONT! im a personal trainer myself and have tried it out myself to inform my students. i did it and only lasted 4 days and had no energy what so ever through the whole process. if you do, do it with planned meals throughout the day and stick to it.

This diet DOES work! you just need to do the special diet afterwards to wean your body back onto solids, also when you feel reall really bad that's just the toxins coming out, you will find the next day or two after that you will feel GREAT! If you're worried about muscle loss, if you're training or walking etc, do what I do and get a pure whey protein mix (no junk, flavours, just pure whey protein) or eat a small tin of tuna a day (in springwater only) for the protein! I have done all of the above and usually lose about 8kgs over two weeks, I'm only slightly overweight and do this detox every couple of months ... It really does work IF YOU DO IT RIGHT!

am starting this detox next week. would like to know some starting weights of people. i am not heavy but have a few extra kilo's i could budge. wondering results of smaller people ,that of 60kilo's and under. i wonder if people realise this is a detox not a weight loss program??! the idea is to get rid of all the crap in our bodies, with the bonus side effect of weight loss...

I did this diet for 4days, and lost 5 pounds. I experienced everything everyone spoke of...no hunger, felt light and energetic, lost weight etc....the side effects not spoken which are the bad ones for me was, in the early days you lust for food. I felt no hunger at all, but all of a sudden the food smelt 10times better and looked 10times better. Its really the habit of eating. And that I gave into on Day5. The funny thing is, when i did eat, my body only wanted the healthy stuff like veggies etc, but my tongue/brain the bad stuff..which right there should tell you, its a mind thing. All the junk food is nicely advertised to you and not a fruit. And one thing no one speaks of, its incredibly hard to gain the weight you have lost on this diet. You continue dropping weight even after you have ended the fast (which is what it is). To motivate myself I say its not a 10mth diet plan, its just a few days, and remember you ALREADY know how the foods you crave for taste, its not going to kill you to give it up for a few days to clean your body out. Most junk food causes cancer and other ailments...the food we crave for.

And another thing, too much of anything is good for nothing. I read a lot of comments on this and ask if some people just dont have common sense. As an adult, you must know never over do anything, it never helps. Because those that have a problem with the diet, I am sure is chowing down on a Big Mac drenched in saturated fat each day/week. Also, the big drama when its something natural from the earth, but ok when its artifical foods. It makes you wonder!

I tried this diet because I wanted to quickly lose weight before I went on holiday. I only lasted 2 and a half days before I gave it up. Although I was really excited when I started to lose weight I felt absoutely terrible the entire time. I know that headaches etc are part of the detox but when I started vomitting I decided that losing a few kgs wasn't worth it, not to mention that the syrup tasted gross. I understand that some people get really good results on this diet and not everyone experiences the side effects like I did but it is definitely not suited to everybody.

I've been on the detox twice in the past year. First three days are hard but around the fifth day you will start to feel better. The skin was smoother and more radiant. If you can go for 7 days you will start to feel light and a lot of energy. The first time I went on it I went for 9 days, my wife only lasted 5 days. She just could resist foods. I, on the contrary, felt great. I could not remember when the last time I felt that good. I lost about 5 kilo. Mind you I did not go on it for weigh problem. Because I don't have a weigh problem. I'm in fact light frame. It was purely for health benefit. After the cleansing period we started on normal food but we prefer healthy food like brown rice, vegetables and non-fatty foods. Somehow you are conditioned to natural and healthy food. After 2 months or so I put on back a couple of kilos but still lighter than before going on the diet. We aim to do it at least once a year. Twice a year would be good. I have recommended this to a number of friends. All have very good results. I think the key to success is perseverance. Try pass the first 4-5 days you will want to go on. Merely because you feel so good. If you are so much overweight there is no way you are going to lose all the weight in 7-10 days. But this will be the start. Following the cleansing process you will be healthy inside and will feel more motivated to go on a healthy diet and do exercise. Which is the only way to lose weight effectively.

After much consideration I have started the lemon detox today. I weigh 65kg's and am 166cm tall, so I wouldn't say I am overweight but I have some winter bulges I would like to get rid of. The honest motivation behind this is to lose weight, however I hope that I will reconnect with my desire for health and fitness after this kick start. I am aiming for 7 days and hope to lose around 3-4kg's, my biggest concern is muscle loss so I'll be doing some light exercise to hopefully prevent this. I'm not sure about the absence of hunger some people have reported, I am only part way through day one and have already felt hungry with lots of rumbles coming from my stomach. To get through I will focus on how great (hopefully) I will feel in a weeks time!
